Medical & Mobility

Titanium has become a staple of the medical sector as it is light, strong, corrosion resistant and also has the ability to form a direct interface between an implant and bone.  Because titanium is non-ferromagnetic, patients with titanium implants can be safely examined with magnetic resonance imaging. This enables the use of titanium implants and orthopaedic rods, pins and plates for many medical applications.

Another use for titanium is in image-guided surgery and surgical instruments as lightness reduces surgeon fatigue. High strength and low weight is also desirable for mobility aids such as wheelchairs, crutches and hospital beds.  Titanium and copper blended alloys can be used as an antimicrobial surface for wall claddings, with the ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms on the surface of the material. Such surfaces are suitable for surgery rooms, clinics, portable hospitals and industry which require a sterile healthcare setting to prevent the spread of infections.
